چکیده

We calculate the effects of frame dragging on the Galactic-Center stars. Assuming the stars are only slightly relativistic, we derive an approximation to the Kerr metric, which turns out to be a weak field Schwarzschild metric plus a frame dragging term. By numerically integrating the resulting geodesic equations, we compute the effect on keplerian elements and the kinematics. We find that the kinematic effect at pericenter passage is proportional to (a(1−e)). For known Galactic-center stars it is of order 10 m/s. If observed this would provide a measurement of the spin of the black hole. Subject headings: gravitation — relativity — stellar dynamics — Galaxy: nucleus

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Stellar Dynamics at the Galactic Center with a Thirty Meter Telescope

We discuss physical experiments achievable via the infrared monitoring of stellar dynamics in the neighborhood of the massive black hole at the Galactic center with the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Given the likely observational capabilities of the TMT and what is currently known about the stellar environment at the Galactic Center, we synthesize plausible samples of stellar orbits ar...

Discovery of an Unbound Hyper-velocity Star in the Milky Way Halo

We have discovered a star, SDSS J090745.0+024507, leaving the Galaxy with a heliocentric radial velocity of +853± 12 km s, the largest velocity ever observed in the Milky Way halo. The star is either a hot blue horizontal branch star or a B9 main sequence star with a heliocentric distance ∼55 kpc. Corrected for the solar reflex motion and to the local standard of rest, the Galactic rest-frame v...

The Galactic Potential and the Asymmetric Distribution of Hypervelocity Stars

In recent years several hypervelocity stars (HVSs) have been observed in the halo of our Galaxy. Such HVSs have possibly been ejected from the Galactic center and then propagated in the Galactic potential up to their current position. The recent survey for candidate HVSs show an asymmetry in the kinematics of candidate HVSs (position and velocity vectors), where more outgoing stars than ingoing...

A Successful Targeted Search for Hypervelocity Stars

Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) travel with velocities so extreme that dynamical ejection from a massive black hole is their only suggested origin. Following the discovery of the first HVS by Brown and collaborators, we have undertaken a dedicated survey for more HVSs in the Galactic halo and present here the resulting discovery of two new HVSs: SDSS J091301.0+305120 and SDSS J091759.5+672238, trave...
